A framework for character education in schools

Synopsis

This paper sets out an argument for what character and character education is, and what it is not. Drawing on various research it argues that schools that value character education often have academic, professional and social success. They are committed to developing the character of their pupils through the demonstration of core ethical virtues and the cultivation of meaningful personal relationships.

Character education, it explains, builds on what is already happening in schools, as most teachers see character cultivation as a central part of their role. Providing resources for teachers to support character development in their pupils, it concludes that consideration of character, of the kind of person pupils hope to become, should form a pivotal part of both teaching and education.
