Synopsis
Leadbeater's report, launched as part of the Open Ideas programme by Pearson, argues that education modelled only on following instruction does not equips pupils for the challenges they will face in the modern world.
Based on interviews and observations of schools around the world, Leadbeater argues that schools cannot teach problem solving in traditional ways, and instead have to provide pupils with experiences of what it involves so they can learn by doing.
He suggests that education needs to cultivate creative critical thinking and collaborative skills, and help pupils develop attributes such as curiosity, courage and resilience, providing examples of schools and programmes that encourage critical thinking and problem solving in pupils.
