Top 20 principles from psychology for pre-K12 teaching and learning
Synopsis
In 2002, the American Psychological Association formed a coalition for psychology in schools and education. Together they identified 20 key principles for teaching, learning and guidance on how these principles impact teaching and learning.
This paper presents those 20 principles, broken down into broad sections covering how pupils think and learn; what motivates learners; how important are a pupil’s social background and personal relationship to their learning; how a class can be best managed; and how pupil progress can be best assessed.
Each principle is named and described, relevant supporting literature is provided, and its relevance for the classroom is discussed.
