Synopsis
This review focuses on effective teaching, assessment for learning, inclusive classroom practices for pupils with special educational needs, self-evaluation for school improvement, and successful leadership.
Based upon research evidence, the authors suggest that effective teachers are clear about instructional goals; are knowledgeable about curriculum content and the strategies for teaching it; communicate to their pupils what is expected of them, and make use of existing instructional materials so they can devote more time to practices that enrich and clarify the content.
The authors suggest that in order to achieve good teaching, good subject knowledge is essential, and that the skillful use of well-chosen questions to engage and challenge pupils is an important tool in the effective use of assessment for learning.
