This paper outlines the means and methods of creating what it describes as 'turnaround schools' - schools whose chronic poor performance has been drastically improved. It outlines four key, interlinked methods to implement yearly progress: pointing out the urgency of the required drastic change; consistently focussing on improving instruction; provide 'quick wins' in the form of palpable improvements early on in the turnaround process; and building a committed workforce. The guide also provides a checklist to show how to carry out each recommendation, and uses case studies to demonstrate how the recommended practices have worked in other schools undergoing the 'turnaround process'.
