Reflective teaching in schools
Synopsis
Professor Pollard argues that teaching is a complex and highly skilled activity, and teachers must exercise judgment in deciding how to act to support learning most effectively. High-quality teaching, and pupil achievement that comes with it, is dependent on the existence of professional expertise and reflection. This, he believes, is ‘reflective teaching’.
Good teachers consider a range of evidence, both about their own work and that of others, and use this evidence to enriches the quality of their teaching judgments: this this way their practice becomes ‘evidence-informed’ and reflective.
Pollard, former Director of the UK's Teaching and Learning Research Programme, led development of this book, with support from primary and secondary specialists from the University of Cambridge, UK. This book is part of a fully integrated set of resources for primary and secondary education. Readings for Reflective Teaching in Schools directly complements and extends the chapters in this book.
