Synopsis
Graves addresses the everyday problems encountered by teachers, particularly around teaching writing. He offers successful techniques, arguing that teachers can’t teach writing if they haven’t experienced the process, as well as the joy, of fashioning a text for pupils.
He lists four essentials to a successful writing process:the adequate provision of time (at least four days per week); allowing pupils choice of writing topic; responding to pupils’ meaning-making; and the establishment of a community of learner-writers.
He adds that continued success in teaching writing depends on teachers’ work with their own writing. He suggests a study programme, as well as additional reading materials, to help with continual improvement.
