Teaching happiness and wellbeing in schools: learning to ride elephants

Synopsis

This book explores how to best enable individuals to make the best of their potential, drawing on a growing body of scientific evidence on the causal factors around happiness and wellbeing that can then be applied to education.

Morris suggests that the process of teaching wellbeing involves pupils in a simple three-stage process: awareness (notice), intervention (act) and evaluation (reflect). He proposes that the wellbeing of pupils is anchored to teacher wellbeing and whole school wellbeing. All forms of wellbeing, he suggests, are poised at the centre of education with the support of the ‘satellite principles’ of stillness, awareness, strength, prudence, values and relationships.

Each chapter provides lesson ideas and teacher resources for developing pupils’ wellbeing.
