The cage-busting teacher

Synopsis

This book, a follow up to ‘Cage-busting leadership’, argues that teachers have the powers to actively shape their working environment, but are routinely trapped by cages of their own making. These cages are the routines, rules and habits that sap teachers’ energy and undermine their confidence.

Hess offers a variety of practical ways that teachers can escape from these cages. Cage-busting teachers, he argues, find ways both inside and outside their classrooms to bring all of their ideas and experience together. He suggests solutions that engage more constructively with policy makers, regulators, administrators and other educators.

The book also has useful resources that teachers can use for classroom preparation, advocacy and professional development.
