Teach like a pirate: increase student engagement, boost your creativity, and transform your life as an educator

Synopsis

Taking the acronym PIRATE (passion, immersion, rapport, ask and analyse, transformation, and enthusiasm) the author explores different techniques for engaging pupils and building report. He identifies three types of passion: content, professional, and personal and illustrates the power of immersion in teaching through the metaphor of a lifeguard and a swim instructor.

He explores rapport as the means through which teachers first to learn who their pupils are, and to teach different learning styles. For ask and analyse, he encourages teachers to understand that the creative process depends on fostering inquiry both in themselves and their pupils.

Transformation advocates reframing the subject being taught by providing relevance, real-world connection, and creative opportunities, while for enthusiasm he suggests that if one consistently ramps up the enthusiasm level in the classroom, they will be a dramatically better teacher.
