Effective phonics teaching for schools

Synopsis

This collection of publications on successful phonics teaching strategies aims at helping schools to select an effective phonics programme and includes research on phonics strategies for teachers.

Phonics screenings were introduced in 2012 by DFE and are taken by all children in Year One, unless their teachers exempt them. It consists of an individual, oral assessment requiring the child to read of words and pseudo-words.

The Department for Education claims research shows that teaching phonics in a structured way, starting with the easiest sounds and progressing through to the most complex, is the most effective way of helping young children learn to read. It is particularly helpful for 5 to 7 year old children.

CPD Opportunities

This collection will support teachers who have responsibility for teaching young children with the phonics approach.
