Joining the dots: driver youth trust report on SEND reforms
Synopsis
The Joining the Dots report from LKMco, an education Think Tank, warns that provision for young people with special educational needs and disability (SEND) is becoming fragmented, despite reforms that aimed to provide a simpler and more joined up system.
The goal of this report was to highlight the changes that have taken place since 2010; examine the effect of these changes on those with SEND; and make practical and realistic recommendations to policy makers, schools and Ofsted.
The report recommends a mandatory minimum level of training on special educational needs and disability for classroom teachers; for Ofsted to investigate how schools support the attainment of SEND pupils and whether the training needs of teachers are being met; and that every school or cluster has a SEND specialist providing expertise to support schools to ensure the best possible provision.
