Developing great teaching: lessons from the international reviews into effective professional development.
Synopsis
This review, commissioned in 2014 by the Teacher Development Trust, looks at international research into effective professional development for teachers. The key finding of the review was that professional development opportunities that are carefully designed, and have a strong focus on pupil outcomes, have a significant impact on pupil achievement.
The review also found that there was a “crucial nuance” to what constitutes this careful design, including the duration, structure, content and activities associated with effective professional development.
The review also discusses the role of external facilitators, and offers some insight into the importance of leadership in professional development.
