Developing behaviour management content for initial teacher training
Synopsis
Following on from a 2015 review into initial teacher training (ITT), this report makes it clear that providers of ITT should ensure that trainee teachers are able to access high-quality behaviour management training before they enter the classroom
It recommends that ITT providers be required to train or locate mentors, tutors and coaches with demonstrable abilities in behaviour management, and emphasises the need for trainers to be highly skilled and have an in-depth knowledge in the area.
It concludes that training programmes should ensure that trainee teachers are introduced to the physical practice of running a classroom before the beginning of their initial placements. ITT providers must provide the resources required for new teachers to create a tangible portfolio so they can demonstrate relative proficiency in behaviour management. Such training should focus on three areas that are essential for the design and maintenance of ordered, safe and productive classrooms: routines, responses and relationships.
