Synopsis
Following a perceived decline in the international performance of Australian pupils, this report sets out to determine what practices have the best effect for improving pupils’ learning.
Practices are explored over seven themes: high expectations; explicit teaching; effective feedback; use of data to inform practice; classroom management; wellbeing; and collaboration. The various authors suggest that these themes are best seen as interconnected, and that teachers who see how they overlap will help their pupils achieve the best results.
The authors also point out that while the themes described offer a list of effective educational practice, they are not the only things that teachers and school leaders should focus on to improve pupil outcomes, and that responsibility for helping pupils’ reach their potential must extend out of the school and into the community and family as well.
