Looking at how schools can create a culture for truly great teaching, Tomsett writes about the need to get the conditions for learning right: an 'agricultural model of education' rather than a factory model.
A key part of a positive school culture, he argues, is teachers' relationships with pupils: by improving those relationships you improve teaching and learning. This isn't just about putting the interests of pupils first, he writes that teachers and staff also need to be respected and supported.
Tomsett recognises that a school's greatest resource is its teachers, and that a teacher's greatest resource is time. As such, he suggests that professional development should be worthwhile and not onerous, and based around evidence and proven techniques.
