Synthesis of IES-funded research on mathematics (2002–2013)
Synopsis
The USA’s Institute of Education Sciences develops and tests instructional strategies and instructional materials for improving pupils’ mathematics learning. This research focused on a variety of mathematics topics, including basic numeracy and algebra, and includes research on pupils in general education settings, as well as those with learning difficulties and disabilities.
The author lists 28 ways government funded research has changed what is known about how to teach whole numbers, fractions, algebra, and other maths topics. Results of IES-funded research for improving mathematics learning are organized into two sections based on mathematics topics and grade level: whole numbers, operations, and word problem solving in elementary school; and fractions and algebra in middle school.
