Policy and research evidence in the reform of primary initial teacher education in England

Synopsis

This latest review from Cambridge Primary Review Trust covers policies and research from 2009 to 2016around teaching training. Exploring evidence on recent changes and current policy in teacher education discourses, policy and practices - alongside an historical perspective - the authors identify problems in the trajectory of teacher education policy and make recommendations for various improvements.

The report focuses on the shift in teacher education from universities to schools, and how teacher training has become more relevant to senior leadership teams within schools. The first chapter explores the scope and methodology of the review, positioning it within the context of the original 2008 review of initial teacher training. The report then moves on to consider the current context that teacher training operates in, before examining the demographics of the teaching workforce, skills and pedagogy, and finally offering conclusions and recommendations for both policy and practice.
