Creating a culture: how school leaders can optimise behaviour

Outlining the findings of an independent review into behaviour in schools, this report builds on the work of the Initial Teacher Training Behaviour Review Group. The Group was commissioned in 2015 to review and advise the Department for Education on ways to improve core provision for teacher training around behaviour.
The findings of the report are based on observation from school visits. Numerous indicators suggest that behavior could be better in a great number of schools and contexts. Bennett identifies a number of strategies that schools with outstanding behaviour use, and explains how effective these strategies are likely to be when applied to different school and pupil contexts.
Many of the schools visited shared common features, values and leadership themes, which were expressed through a variety of strategies. Although these strategies were often interpreted in different ways, they shared elements of good practice that school leaders can interpret to suit their own school’s demographics, resources and staff.
